Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) โ Everything You Need to Know Before Applying! ๐ฐ๐ท๐
If youโve ever dreamed of studying in Korea for free, the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is your golden opportunity. But before you apply, letโs break down everything you need to know to maximize your chances of success!
What is the GKS Scholarship?
The GKS is a fully funded scholarship provided by the Korean government, covering:
โ
Full tuition fees
โ
Monthly stipend (โฉ1,200,000, not โฉ900,000 as some sources claim!)
โ
Round-trip airfare
โ
Medical insurance
โ
One year of Korean language training
This makes GKS one of the best scholarships for international students!
How to Apply for GKS? (2 Tracks & Their Uniqueness)
There are two ways to apply, each with a unique process:
1๏ธโฃ University Track ๐ฉ
You choose only one university and send your documents directly to them.
You need to convince the university that you are a strong candidate for their program.
If shortlisted, you may be required to take an online interview.
If accepted, the university sends your documents to NIIED (the organization that operates GKS) for final approval.
2๏ธโฃ Embassy Track ๐
You choose up to three universities and submit your documents to the Korean Embassy in your country.
The embassy conducts an interview to "filter" candidates before forwarding their documents to universities.
If you pass the embassy interview, the universities will receive your application.
Most universities will NOT conduct an additional interview because they trust the embassyโs screening process.
If a university accepts you, they forward your documents to NIIED for final selection.
๐ Final Steps After Acceptance:
Once NIIED finalizes the list of successful candidates, they upload it to the official website.
If accepted, you receive an invitation letter for your visa application.
After visa approval, you receive your air ticket to Korea! ๐
When Can You Apply?
๐
Masterโs & PhD: February โ March
๐
Bachelorโs: August โ September
Check the official GKS website and your local Korean Embassy for exact deadlines.
Required Documents for GKS Application
Your application must include the following properly prepared documents:
๐ Passport & Birth Certificate โ Proof of nationality.
๐ GKS Application Form โ Accurately filled out with:
Motivational Letter โ Explain why you want to study in Korea.
Study Plan โ A detailed academic plan.
Future Plan โ Your career goals after graduation.
๐ Diplomas & Transcripts โFor Masterโs applicants: Bachelorโs diploma & transcripts.
For Bachelorโs applicants: High school diploma & transcripts.
โ๏ธ Two Recommendation Letters โEnclosed in a sealed envelope (you must NOT be able to read them).
Signed and stamped on the recommendation letter and mail slip.
๐ TOPIK or IELTS/TOEFL (Optional but Recommended) โ
TOPIK Level 3 or higher boosts your application & can exempt you from language training.
TOEFL 80+ or IELTS 7.0 strengthens your application, especially for English-based programs.
๐จ Important! Ensure all documents are properly signed, stamped, and sealed before submission!
TOPIK Requirement: What Happens If You Don't Pass?
๐ You must obtain at least TOPIK Level 3 after completing the one-year Korean language course to start your degree.
๐ If you fail to achieve TOPIK Level 3, your monthly stipend will be reduced by 30% until you pass.
๐ Some universities require TOPIK Level 4 or higher, so check their requirements!
Secret Tip to Increase Your Chances of Success!
Many students apply through both tracks to increase their chances:
๐น Since the Embassy Track starts one month earlier, students apply for it first.
๐น If they fail the embassy screening, they still have time to apply through the University Track.
๐น To do this, they send their documents in advance to a friend or family member in Korea, who can quickly submit their University Track application.
๐จ Before using this strategy, make sure to:
โ
Check deadlines โ In some countries, both tracks have the same deadline.
โ
Confirm details with the Korean Embassy & universities via email or their official websites.
This method requires careful planning, but it can double your chances!
Pros & Cons of GKS
โ
Pros:
โ๏ธ Full financial support (tuition, stipend, airfare, etc.)
โ๏ธ Free one-year Korean language training
โ๏ธ Access to top universities in Korea
โ๏ธ Great networking opportunities for your future career
โ ๏ธ Challenges:
โ Highly competitive โ Thousands apply, but spots are limited.
โ Cultural & language barriers โ You must adjust to Koreaโs strict academic & social environment.
โ TOPIK requirement โ You must pass TOPIK Level 3 within a year, or your stipend gets cut.
